A Turkish labor confederation calculated on Thursday hunger threshold in Turkey as 554 USD.

The Confederation of Turkish Labor Unions (Turk-Is) released a statement on the results of its hunger and poverty threshold in January 2011.

The confederation said a family of four needed 554 USD (870 Turkish liras-TL) a month just to buy food (hunger threshold).

It also said a family of four needed 1,805 USD (2,835 TL) a month to cover mandatory expenses such as food, rent, transport, health and education (poverty threshold).

In its statement, Turk-Is said the year-on-year rise in monthly kitchen expenditures was almost 36 USD (58 TL), and the rise in overall expenditures was 121 USD (190 TL).

The net minimum wage is actually 417.56 USD (655.57 TL) in Turkey.

According to the Turkish statistical authority, TurkStat, 12,751,000 people are living below the poverty threshold in Turkey.

In December 2010, the hunger threshold was 552.2 USD (867 TL), and the poverty threshold was 1,800 USD (2,826 TL).
