A survey conducted by Turkey's statistics authority TurkStat has revealed that nearly one-fourth of Turkish consumers reside in the north-western city of Istanbul.

According to TurkStat's regional results of household consumption expenditures covering the 2007-2008-2009 term, 24.6 percent of total consumption expenditure is done by households in Istanbul.

Aegean and Mediterranean regions follow Istanbul with consumption rates of 13.9 percent and 12.1 percent respectively, as only 2 percent of total expenditure belongs to households in North East Anatolia region, TurkStat said.

Southeast Anatolia, with a rate of 33.1 percent, has the highest share in expenditures on food and non-alcoholic beverages, while the same region has the lowest share for educational expenditures with a rate of 1.1 percent, according to TurkStat.

In Istanbul, expenditure on housing and rent has the highest share with a rate of 33.8 percent, whereas the share of expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages reach 18.9 percent, the survey said.

According to Turkstat, in terms of the share of expenditures on transportation in total expenditure,Mediterranean region has the highest portion with a rate of 15 percent.
