Two workers still missing in Turkey mine blast

Thousands of coal miners in Turkey work in harsh conditions hundreds of meters below the ground and even risk death to make a living.

Three coal mine accidents that took place in Turkey in the last five months created a huge death toll. 66 miners were killed in accidents which occurred in Bursa, Balikesir and Zonguldak.

The mine collapse in the Mustafakemalpasa town of Bursa on December 10, 2009 killed 19 workers while a firedamp explosion in Dursunbey, Balikesir on February 23, 2010 killed 17 workers.

An explosion which took place in the Karadon coal mine last week in the Black Sea port city of Zonguldak last week killed 28 workers. Two more workers are still missing.

Mehmet Torun of the Chamber of Mine Engineers, said three firedamp explosions in such a short period of time showed that safety measures were not sufficient.

"We have prepared a risk map and determined 9 priority risk areas including Zonguldak, Manisa, Corum and Ermenek. We made warnings against possible deadly explosions and collapses in mines and called for measures and inspections. But measures were not taken and 66 people died in five months," said Torun.
