Italy has been criticized by a prominant charity for failing migrant children.
Raffaela Milano from the Save the Children charity complained that an icreasing number of adolescents are escaping from migrant centers on a systematic basis. The migrant youths are then put at risk of being exploited on the streets.
The charity spokesman called for centers that cannot prevent minors from escaping to be shut down in a statement on Tuesday.
It is believed that 500 of 800 minors who were recently rescued from the Mediterranean Sea while trying to cross into Sicily have gone missing.
"The risks these boys and girls are exposing themselves to is enormous. They can end up as unskilled workers on the black market, be sexually exploited, fall into criminality," Milano warned.
The Arab Spring, the civil war in Syria and unrest in African nations have seen an increase of migrants attempting to flee the northern African coast into Europe across the sea, risking their lives to do so.
So far this year, 2,370 unaccompanied minors have arrived in Italy, the charity claims. Most journey to Italy to be united with relatives already there. When the Italian authorities fail to reunite them with family, the children often risk the journey alone.
The number of migrants entering Italy has increased ten-fold compared to the same period last year, and asylum applications have increased by 140%.Last Mod: 16 Nisan 2014, 17:59
