Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi cancelled a trip to Russia on Saturday to continue consultations with EU leaders over a growing debt crisis threatening the euro zone, a government source said.
Berlusconi had been due to travel to Russia to attend celebrations for the 65th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.
The Italian prime minister and the other leaders of the 16 countries that use the single currency said on Friday they were ready to take whatever steps were needed to protect the stability of the euro zone from financial turmoil in Greece.
The proposals, whose details have not been made public, will be presented to all 27 European Union finance ministers for approval on Sunday.
