Climate change activists on Monday have blocked a runway at London Heathrow Airport in protest against its planned expansion.

A spokesman for the airport confirmed that "around a dozen" demonstrators cut through the airport perimeter fence to get onto the runway at 3.30 a.m. local time (0230GMT). There were delays to flights, the spokesman confirmed.

Protesters lay on the tarmac covered with blankets and a few chained themselves to metal objects near the runway. The demonstrators were protesting against plans to build a third runway at the airport.

The spokesman said: "We are working closely with the police who are dealing with the incident. The southern runway remains open. Our priority remains to ensure the safety of the airport community, including passengers, employees and protesters.”
