President Dervis Eroglu of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias did not hold their previously scheduled meeting in Lefkosa on Thursday.
The Cypriot leaders, who were supposed to get together under the ongoing peace talks in Cyprus, arrived at the meeting place at the buffer zone, however, the two did not have a meeting.
Greek Cypriot leader Christofias came to the meeting venue an hour late and no statements were made regarding his late arrival.
Unlike previous meetings, TRNC's President Eroglu was not welcomed by any UN officials upon his arrival, whereas, Christofias was greeted by UN Secretary General's special adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer as he arrived.
A short time after Christofias entered the meeting place, Eroglu, accompanied by his delegation, left the venue without delivering any statements.
Leaders were expected to discuss and make presentations on the "Property" issue during their gathering today.
Eroglu's predecessor Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias got together 71 times under the extensive settlement talks, which began on September 11, 2008. The last meeting took place on March 30.
President Eroglu's first meeting with Christofias took place on Wednesday, May 26 after Eroglu became TRNC's new president.
However, Downer said that planned meeting of Cypriot leaders under reunification talks was postponed due to a demand by Christofias.
Christofias asked postponement, however, Dervis Eroglu had already arrived at the meeting place until he was contacted, Downer told reporters.
So, Christofias decided to go to the meeting venue too, he said.
Unlike previous meetings, Eroglu was not welcomed by any UN officials upon his arrival, whereas, Christofias was greeted by Alexander Downer as he arrived.
Downer said Eroglu was not welcomed because UN officials were trying to contact him by phone at the time he arrived. Downer said there were no political reasons.
Delegations led by representatives of Cypriot leaders will get together later in the day.
