The European Union’s enlargement chief Johannes Hahn has urged Kosovo to strengthen its border and to explain to its citizens that they cannot guarantee asylum.

Hahn was speaking on Wednesday outside a joint press conference with Kosovan Prime Minister Isa Mustafa as part of his visit to the country.

The Austrian official said that Kosovo and the EU must work together to create an environment for business in order to attract investors, adding that technical and financial support from the EU for Kosovo will continue.

"Kosovo has made progress but there are certain criteria that must be fulfilled. The government of Kosovo should strengthen the border and should explain to its citizens that they cannot guarantee asylum outside the country," said Hahn.

Prime Minister Isa Mustafa claimed that Kosovo was working to strengthen the rule of law in a large fight against corruption and organized crime. He said that his government was working on economic development and normalizing relations with Serbia to fulfill requirements for European integration.

Hahn is also expected to meet Serbian politicians and business leaders in Pristina during his formal visit.
