The EU's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has proposed Italian diplomat Fernando Gentilini as the bloc's special representative to the Middle East, Italy's foreign minister said on Monday.
"Federica Mogherini proposed as EU representative for the Middle East Mr. Gentilini, who is a very valiant Italian diplomat," Italy's Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni told reporters.
He said the role "has nothing to do with the role of Tony Blair. We did not discuss that," referring to the former British prime minister who is envoy for the Middle East Quartet.
Gentilini, an EU official, is the director for Western Europe, Western Balkans and Turkey at the European External Action Service (EEAS) and has worked in Afghanistan for NATO and Kosovo.
His appointment must be approved by EU foreign ministers and is aimed at reinvigorating the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
