Police evacuated one of the departure halls inside the Frankfurt airport on Wednesday due to the presence of a suspicious person, the airport tweeted Wednesday.

According to the official Twitter account of Frankfurt airport (@Airport_FRA), "Today at Frankfurt Airport a passenger entered the security area before the security check had been completed.

"Therefore the German federal police cleared departure hall A as a preventative measure. Passengers will be rechecked prior to departure."

Flight delays are expected at the airport, an airport spokesperson told the German news outlet, Spiegel.

Frankfurt airport is one of the biggest airports in Europe; it comes third in terms of passenger traffic after Heathrow in London and Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport.

The airport has become Germany's largest employment complex at a single location, with more than 500 companies and organizations providing jobs for more than 80,000 people.

An estimated 154,000 passengers pass through the Frankfurt airport every day.
