German woman killed in Egypt shark attack

A shark killed a German tourist in the Red Sea on Sunday, days after a string of attacks injured several divers, Egypt health officials said.

The body of the 70-year-old woman was found washed up on the shore at the Red Sea resort Sharm el-Sheikh. The officials said she had lost her right thigh and right elbow while swimming.

"It is unusual to have four attacks in a week," said Rolf Schmid, manager of the Sinai Diver's Centre. "The attack happened in a shallow area called Middle Garden north of Naama Bay, and the whole area hasn't had sharks for the past 10 to 15 years."

Last week, four divers -- three Russians and a Ukrainian -- were injured in the Red Sea, prompting Egyptian officials to impose a 48-hour swimming ban in part of the area, one of Egypt's most popular tourist destinations.

It was not immediately clear whether the woman, who was not named, was swimming inside or outside the area where swimming had been banned.
