Seventy seven migrants including eight women were rescued on Monday 40 miles south of the Italian island of Lampedusa and taken to the island on a Coast Guard cutter.

As the influx of illegal immigrants continue to the Lampedusa Island, Italy's nearest piece of land to the African continent, more than 70 migrants who were travelling on a small dinghy asked for help late on Sunday, calling Palermo Fleet Command with a satellite phone.

Transferred to the cutter sent as part of the rescue operation by the Palermo port authorities, the migrants saying they hailed from Nigeria and Ghana arrived in Lampedusa shortly after 6 am.
