Italy's Senate gave the green light to Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni's government on Wednesday, officially ending the country's political crisis following ex-premier Matteo Renzi's downfall.

Of the 268 senators who voted, 169 backed the government while 99 voted against, completing the required parliamentary approval of the new administration.

Several opposition parties boycotted the vote, insisting the government had no legitimacy in light of the referendum defeat.
