The founder of Italy's Northern League party, Umberto Bossi, and two of his sons are under investigation in a probe into misuse of public funds, a judicial source told Reuters news agency on Wednesday.

The source said Bossi was under investigation for suspected fraud, while his sons Renzo and Riccardo were being investigated for alleged embezzlement.

Bossi resigned as leader of the Northern League last month as allegations emerged that funds the party received from the state for electoral campaigns had been used to renovate his house and pay for his children's holidays and cars.

He has stayed on as party president. Bossi and his sons deny any wrongdoing.

The Northern League suffered heavy losses at this month's local elections because of the growing scandal, which is likely to help former Interior Minister Roberto Maroni take over the leadership of the party.
