Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and United States Secretary of State John Kerry had a telephone conversation to discuss the situation in Syria, the Russian Foreign Ministry website said Monday.

Discussing last Wednesday's poison gas attack in suburbs of Syrian capital Damascus with Kerry, Lavrov urged US "to beware of the provocations".

Lavrov, warning Kerry against any military intervention in Syria, said that the results of such a move would be extremely dangerous for the entire Middle East.

Lavrov, stating that the providing the necessary conditions for United Nations to probe the chemical weapon attack in detail and objectively was important, also noted that "the unilateral conclusions" on Syria would bring efforts to hold an international peace conference in Geneva to a standstill.

US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said on Friday that, if claims of use of chemical weapons in Syria proved to be true, "a speedy response" would be needed to prevent another such attack from happening again.
