A local official was shot dead in Russia's Kabardino-Balkaria region on Friday, investigators said.
The state-run RIA news agency cited local investigators as saying the head of the district administration in Chegem, some 10 kilometres from the regional capital of Nalchik, was shot as at 7:50 pm local time (1650 GMT).
"Four shots were fired into Mikhail Mambetov's back while he was walking into his home. Mambetov was taking to the hospital where he died of his wounds," a spokesman for investigators told RIA.
Kabardino-Balkaria is at the heart of a new Kremlin plan to develop a network of ski resort on the slopes of Caucasus' challenging peaks.
President Dmitry Medvedev unveiled pitched the ambitious $15-billion plan to investors in Davos this week as a means to revitalise the region.
The plan has been dubbed Peak 5,642 after Europe's tallest mountain, Mount Elbrus, which crowns the Kabardino-Balkaria region.
