New figures released by the UK Ministry of Justice show that the proportion of prisoners in jails in the UK who are Muslim has doubled over the past decade.

The same report also shows that black people are six times more likely to be stopped and searched by police than white people, while Asians and mixed-race people are twice as likely. At present 26% of inmates are from an ethnic minority, which is twice their population proportion.

In 2002 7.7% of prisoners were Muslim, but in 2012 the percentage rose to 13.4%. The percentage of those who identify themselves as Christians fell from 58% to 52%, while 30% said they had no religion.
