Britain's new parliament will meet for the first time on May 18 after a nationwide legislative election on May 6, the government said on Tuesday after Prime Minister Gordon Brown confirmed the election date.
The existing parliament will be dissolved on April 12, a statement from Brown's office said.
"The new parliament will be summoned to meet on Tuesday, 18 May, when the first business will be the election of the Speaker and the swearing in of members," it said. The formal state opening of parliament will take place the following week.
