Ireland's Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly on Wednesday became the European Union's new ombudsman.
At the ballot held in the European Parliament to determine the name to replace the retired ombudsman Nikiforos Diamandouros, O'Reilly won absolute majority, 359 votes out of 635, with the support of Socialists, Liberals and Greens.
Christian Democrats' candidate EP Turkey rapporteur Ria Oomen Ruijten of Holland lost with 276 votes.
