Putin's approval rate hits record high

Analysts say Russia's intervention in Syria is behind president's approval rise

Putin's approval rate hits record high

World Bulletin / News Desk

Russian President Vladimir Putin's approval rating within the country hit new record high, according to Russian Public Opinion Research Center's (VTsIOM) latest research released Thursday.

The poll shows that the index has risen to 89,9%, which broke the June 2015 record of 89,1%.

Sociologists suggest that such a high level of approval by Russian citizens of their president is most likely related to Russia's military intervention to the Syrian conflict.

President Putin's approval rate has been growing since spring 2014, when Russia illegaly annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula.

The VTsIOM's other poll also showed that Russians think that blame for the Syrian conflict is on the U.S. and other Western countries.
