Racist taunts as African refugee drowns in Venice

World Bulletin / News Desk

An African refugee has drowned in a canal in Venice as hundreds looked on and filmed him on their cell phones and reportedly laughed and made racist comments.

Disturbing footage posted on Italian news websites shows the man struggling to stay afloat in the Grand Canal.

Nobody jumped into the water to help the 22-year-old Gambian.

In one video released on Italian websites, one person was heard to be shouting “Go on, go back home” and another yells “Africa”. Another onlooker apparently shouted: “He is stupid. He wants to die”.

Reports have said that Mr Sabally sailed from Africa two years ago and ended up at the Italian port of Pozzallo after his boat was intercepted at sea. He was given a permit to stay but made his way to Switzerland to work and was sent back to Italy by officials.

Italian magistrates have now opened an investigation into the incident.
