Russia sentences Khodorkovsky more jail time

A Russian judge sentenced jailed former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky to six additional years in prison on Thursday after convicting him on multi-billion dollar theft and money-laundering charges.

Moscow judge Viktor Danilkin granted the prosecutors' sentencing request and said Khodorkovsky would serve a total of 14 years in prison, including time served since his arrest in October 2003, meaning he is to remain in jail until 2017.

He said that there was no basis for a suspended sentence for Khodorkovsky, whose second trial was seen as a test for the rule of law in Russia and has drawn sharp criticism from the United States and European nations.

Prosecutors have recommended a 14-year sentence for Khodorkovsky, which would add six years imprisonment to the eight-year term Khodorkovsky is currently serving.

Such a sentence would keep him in jail through 2017.
