Russian cargo craft heads for space station

A Russian spacecraft lifted off on Wednesday with supplies for the International Space Station and its crew.

The Progress M-05M shed its rocket stages and entered orbit after blasting off on schedule from the Russian-leased Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan, a representative of Russian mission control outside Moscow said by telephone.

The spaceship was carrying nearly 2.6 tonnes of cargo including fuel and equipment for the station and food, water and care packages for its crew of three Russians, two Americans and a Japanese astronaut.

The cargo vessel is scheduled to dock at the orbital station on Saturday.
