Former US National Security Agency analyst and whistleblower Edward Snowden was elected rector of Glasgow University in Scotland on Tuesday.
The former agent was nominated by students at the university before Snowden granted his approval via his lawyer.
"We are incredibly delighted to see Edward Snowden elected as the new rector of Glasgow University," Glascow University students announced, adding that their institution had a "virtuous tradition of making significant statements through our rectors".
Snowden, who defected to Russia last year after applying for temporarily asylum is believed to be residing around Moscow.
