The self-declared mayor of Slavyansk, Vyacheslav Ponomaryev, said Friday that eight pro-Russian separatists had been killed in the area although the number of deaths sustained by government forces is much higher.

Ponomaryev claimed that 650 Ukrainian servicemen had been captured or killed in clashes.

"The deaths of the government forces should be enough for them to accept us as a fighting side," he added, "we are the experts; I have already warned the government forces about it."

Meanwhile, the Ukraine’s security service said the number of deaths in the last month was 21 with 65 others wounded.

At least 250 people have died in the crisis engulfing Ukraine since November last year, according to the UN’s assistant secretary general for human rights.
