Spanish government decided Friday to send 300 soldiers to train Iraqi troops as part of a U.S.-led coalition effort to fight the ISIL.
Spanish Defense Minister Pedro Morenes told reporters after a meeting of the council of ministers that the soldiers would not be engaged in combat.
He said the mission of soldiers, if approved by the country’s parliament, would last for seven to eight weeks.
The minister said the Spanish soldiers would work alongside Italian soldiers.
Spanish soldiers have been engaged in a similar mission in Mali and Central African Republic in the past.
