Turkish Cypriot FM accuses Greek side of 'poisoning' talks

Turkish Cypriot foreign minister has strongly rejected claims that the Turkish Cypriot side slowed down negotiation talks between two Cyprus leaders aimed at unifying the divided Mediterranean island.

"The Greek Cypriot leadership is conducting a deliberate campaign by putting the blame on the Turkish Cypriot side for lack of progress in the negotiations. It tries to win a leverage on the part of the international community and block process by poisoning the negotiations environment," Huseyin Ozgurgun said in a statement issued on Monday.

Ozgurgun said the Greek Cypriot side was concerned over an active role that the UN chief might assume to speed up settlement talks, adding that the Greek Cypriot administration was trying make sure that no progress could be made in an upcoming meeting under UN secretary-general in Geneva scheduled for January 2011.

Ozgurgun said the Turkish Cypriot side will continue to deploy best of its efforts to win a comprehensive settlement.
