Turkish Cypriot president lashes out Merkel over Cyprus remarks

Turkish Cypriot president on Wednesday directed criticisms against German Chancellor Angela Merkel over her remarks accusing Turkish Cypriot side for a failure to reach a settlement in reunification talks.

"It is a grave mistake on the part of the German chancellor to make comments just by looking to the North from over UN watchtowers at the buffer zone," Dervis Eroglu told reporters after a meeting with Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias.

Eroglu said Merkel failed to hear what the Turkish Cypriot side would say before making her controversial comments, which portrayed the Turkish Cypriot side as unresponsive to any positive steps taken by the Greek Cypriot administration.

Merkel's remarks came during a trip on Tuesday to Greek Cyprus. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan also reacted harshly to the chancellor.

"I guess Ms. Merkel has forgotten what she has said. It was herself who said that admitting southern Cyprus into the European Union would be wrong. It is also clear that she does not know about history of the Cyprus issue. I call on the chancellor to make a research about the history and get a tea with Gerhard Schroeder," Erdogan said.
