Turkish Cypriots celebrate Freedom Day anniversary

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Dervis Eroglu said Monday "July 20, 1974 was a date when Turkish Cypriots reached freedom. This day is an historic one for us".

President Eroglu received Secretary General of the Turkish Presidency Mustafa Isen who arrived in the country to attend the "July 20th, Peace and Freedom Day" celebrations on behalf of Turkish President Abdullah Gul.

Speaking to reporters while receiving Isen, President Eroglu said that they were working to conclude the Cyprus negotiations with an honorable agreement.

There are things the Greek Cypriot side must do in order to reach an agreement, President Eroglu said.

Important developments took place in the TRNC since 1974. Fortunately, we have a motherland, Eroglu stressed.

Mustafa Isen, in his part, said that he arrived in the TRNC to join the celebrations of "July 20th Peace and Freedom Day" on behalf of Turkish President Abdullah Gul and he brought the warm regards of Gul to the TRNC.

Cyprus is on the edge of a new term. Such a status has led to new expectations in Turkey and the world. I hope that there would be better days ahead. I do hope that the 36th anniversary of "July 20" celebrations would be the beginning of such a new term, Isen indicated.
