Turkish Cyprus FM reacts to Armenian President remarks

Turkish Cypriot foreign minister reacted on Wednesday to Armenian president's recent remarks, and said the remarks contradicted historical and legal facts.

Foreign Minister Huseyin Ozgurgun of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) released a statement, saying that Armenian President Serzh Sargsian's remarks during his visit to the Greek Cypriot administration on January 17 lacked historical knowledge.

"Sargsian's remarks lack historical knowledge about Cyprus issue, and it is a new example of remarks made by foreign statesmen who aim to get appreciated by the Greek Cypriot administration," Ozgurgun said.

During his visit to the Greek Cypriot administration on January 17, Sargsian addressed the Greek Cypriot parliament and said the North Cyprus was "invaded" by Turkey.

Ozgurgun said motherland Turkey had staged 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation within the framework of its rights and liabilities stemming from international treaties, and the operation had brought peace to the island.

"We think it will be useful to once more remind Mr. Sargsian that the operation saved Turkish Cypriot people from annihilation," Ozgurgun said.

Ozgurgun said the president of Armenia, which had invaded the Upper Karabakh region of Azerbaijan for years without depending on any international agreements and totally violating international laws, had made those remarks that contradicted historical and legal facts, which he defined as meaningful.
