Turkish, Cyprus leaders to launch construction work on border gate

The first phase of the construction work regarding the opening of "Yesilirmak border gate" between the Turkish and Greek parts of Cyprus will start with a ceremony on Monday.

President Mehmet Ali Talat of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias will participate in the ceremony which will also be attended by officials from the European Union (EU) and the United States which have contributed to the project.

Talat and Christofias had agreed to open the Yesilirmak border crossing to mutual passages during their 34th meeting on June 26, 2009.

The tender regarding the road construction required to open the crossing was signed by UNDP and a Turkish-Greek Cypriot consortium last week.

Construction of the 6-km road is expected to take 4 months, officials said.
