Turkish Cyprus President: KTHY-Atlasjet to make new decisions

President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Dervis Eroglu said that Turkish Cypriot national airlines (KTHY) and private Turkish air carrier (Atlasjet) reached an
agreement.

President Eroglu said at a news conference in New York, "KTHY and Atlasjet have reached an agreement. Now, they will establish a joint company. KTHY Executive Board will convene today or tomorrow to make the necessary decisions."

Asked about the relations between TRNC and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), President Eroglu said, "in the past, Turkish Cypriots attended the OIC meetings as the Turkish Cypriot community. Lately, we attend OIC meetings as the Turkish Cypriot state under the name given during the Annan Plan."

"Since Cyprus talks are continuing on the island, it is not correct to talk about the issue of recognition. Turkey has always proposed OIC-member countries to improve their bilateral relations with the TRNC," he added.

"No need for embargo"

Eroglu said after his meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, "I told the secretary-general that if embargo on the Turkish Cypriot party is lifted, it will motivate the Greek Cypriot party to reach an agreement."

President Eroglu said, "during the meeting, I said that if embargo on the Turkish Cypriot party is lifted, it will motivate the Greek Cypriot party to reach an agreement. I also said that there was no need to impose embargo on Turkish Cypriots. The TRNC is a democratic country and imposing embargo on a democratic country contradicts with human rights. The secretary-general listened to us and pledged us to take action."

"Prior to the twin referenda on the island in 2004, the EU promised for the termination of such isolations, however, the union did not keep its promises and it caused insecurity among Turkish Cypriots. If embargo on the Turkish Cypriot party is lifted, it will motivate the Greek Cypriot party to reach an agreement. It will also remove the insecurity among Turkish Cypriots," he said.

President Eroglu said he proposed that a tripartite meeting to be held in New York in September with the participation of the UN secretary-general, the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and himself would be helpful for Cyprus process.

"I believe that they will give a certain answer to this proposal in fall," he said.

"I believe that it would be unfair to keep Turkish Cypriot people in the coming years in a controversy whether there will be an agreement on the island," President Eroglu added.
