Turkish Cyprus President meets UN envoy

President Dervis Eroglu of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) met with UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer in Lefkosa on Monday.

The gathering, which was the first meeting between the two officials since Eroglu's heart surgery in December, was held at the Turkish Cypriot president's office.

Delivering a statement after the meeting, Downer said both parties in Cyprus were displaying great efforts to negotiate and get closer ahead of the Geneva summit on January 26.

Downer also said he would assist the two parties in the preparation process of the Geneva meeting.

TRNC's President Dervis Eroglu, Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will hold a tripartite meeting in Geneva on January 26, 2011.

Moreover, Eroglu and Christofias are expected to meet on Wednesday within the scope of Cyprus peace talks.
