Turkish Cyprus says Merkel's remarks 'unrealistic'

The Turkish Cypriot foreign minister said on Wednesday that the German chancellor's recent remarks accusing the Turkish Cypriot party for the deadlock in Cyprus were unilateral and unrealistic.

Releasing a written statement, Foreign Minister Huseyin Ozgurgun of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) commented on German Chancellor Angela Merkel's remarks on Cyprus issue during a joint press conference with Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias yesterday.

Expressing TRNC's sorrow over Merkel's statement, Ozgurgun described the chancellor's words as "unfortunate and unreal".

The minister said that TRNC had fulfilled all its responsibilities so far, besides, it still displayed good intentions in order to find a lasting and fair solution to the Cyprus conflict.

Ozgurgun noted that Merkel's remarks would only encourage the Greek Cypriot side's uncompromising stance and serve in the failure of peace talks.
