Ukraine, EU discuss end to political crisis

World Bulletin / News Desk

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule discussed in a meeting various peaceful ways out of the country's current political crisis.

Fule and Yanukovych discussed a settlement for the political crisis in Ukraine through inclusive dialogue between the government, opposition and civil society. Extremist acts will not be tolerated,” according to a statement on official presidency website.

Earlier in the day, Fule also met with opposition leaders Arseny Yatsenyuk, Vitaly Klitschko and Oleh Tyahnybok.

Meanwhile, unidentified attackers threw paint on Yatsenyuk during his visit to ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who is undergoing medical treatment in Kharkiv. Yatsenyuk said he would share the details of the talks with Tymoshenko during a press conference in Kiev.

The statement noted that Yanukovych emphasized the active role of the European Union and the Council of Europe in the search for a democratic way out of the crisis, and the importance of an objective and impartial assessment of the political process.

Protests have been taking place in Kiev since November after Yanukovych decided not to sign a trade agreement with the European Union (EU) amid intense pressure from Russia.

Yanukovych pushed the parliament to pass a measure providing amnesty to detained protesters, but he has made no moves to work with the opposition since last week.
