UN envoy : Turkish, Greek Cyprus reach important consensus on property

President Dervis Eroglu of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias met Wednesday within the scope of Cyprus peace talks in order to discuss mutual proposals on property issue.

Eroglu and Christofias, who met for the 11th time at the buffer zone in Lefkosa, will assess the detailed proposals on property topic all day long.

UN Secretary-General's Special Advisor on Cyprus Alexander Downer and UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim are also attending today's meeting.

Leaders are expected to continue to discuss the property issue on Thursday, officials said.

UN attaches great importance to the outcome of the full-day talks to be held today and tomorrow, sources also noted.

Advisor Downer earlier said that if Cypriot leaders reached an important consensus on property issue, that would constitute a major step for direct negotiations between the parties in the island.

Eroglu and Christofias held their latest meeting on September 3 and presented their summary opinions on the property issue.

Eroglu's predecessor Talat and Greek Cypriot leader Christofias got together 71 times under the extensive settlement talks.

Dervis Eroglu was elected the new president of TRNC on April 18.
