The Pentagon announced Friday that it is recalling the USS Nimitz from the eastern Mediterranean after stationing the ship there in preparation for a potential strike on Syria.
The aircraft carrier was moved to the eastern Mediterranean earlier this summer amid calls for a US strike on Syria after a devastating chemical attack in the suburbs of Damascus.
A strike on Syria was avoided, however, following a US-Russian brokered deal to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles.
The USS Graveley, a naval destroyer, is also expected to return home from the Mediterranean.
The Nimitz is expected to return to its homeport on the US’ West Coast in December.
The US maintains considerable naval resources in the region with an aircraft carrier, two destroyers and a cruiser still stationed there.Güncelleme Tarihi: 09 Kasım 2013, 11:21
