Eleven people died and five others were injured in a traffic accident when a minibus collided with a truck near Beypazarı, Ankara province.

The minibus, driven by Neytullah Ekinci and carrying agricultural workers to the village of Fasıl, collided with a truck driven by İbrahim Karayel along the Nallıhan-Beypazarı highway. Nine of the passengers died at the scene while two others died later. The injured were taken to Beypazarı State Hospital, where one subsequently died.

Three of the victims sustained serious injuries and were sent to Ankara hospitals, but one of the patients died en route to the capital, increasing the number of victims to 11.

Beypazarı District Governor Mustafa Kaya told the Anatolia news agency that the workers who died in the accident were residents of Beypazarı and recently moved to the district from Mazıdağı in Mardin province.

The district governor said the bodies of the victims will be sent to their hometown after autopsies are completed.

The workers were reportedly on their way to harvest carrots, widely produced in Beypazarı. Kaya said most of the victims shared the same last name, Ekinci, and came from the same family.

The Beypazarı-Nallıhan highway was temporarily closed to traffic after the accident, which took place early in the morning.

Ankara Governor Alaaddin Yüksel and Ankara Police Chief Zeki Çatalkaya traveled to Beypazarı to be briefed on the accident and visit the injured.

Speaking to reporters at the District Governor's Office before going to the hospital, Yüksel said 14 people had been in the minibus despite the fact that it was designed to carry 10. Noting that nine died at the scene and that one of the injured died at Beypazarı State Hospital while another died en route to Ankara, the governor said the probably cause of the accident was excessive speed.

Meanwhile, the Agricultural Workers' Union (Tarım-İş) issued a statement, expressing regret over the deaths of the workers.

Stating that agricultural workers should not be consigned to working under harsh conditions, the statement called on the authorities to improve the working conditions of all laborers employed in the agricultural sector.
