Almost 6 million people have crossed the Sarp border gate last year, which is one of the most important border crossings between Turkey and Georgia.

Sarp border gate left behind many border gates in numbers regarding passengers’ entrance and exit in Turkey.

Artvin’s 109 kilometer long border with Georgia, as well as Sarp border gate and Hopa port with which the province take advantage of sea and land is very important for the Black Sea region and country’s economy as well.

Customs and Trade Minister Hayati Yazici told AA that the number of passengers who entered Turkey through Sarp border gate is 2 million 788 thousand and 750, the ones who left Turkey through Sarp border gate is 2 million 818 thousand and 21 in 2012.

Stressing the border gate’s important function between two countries, Yazici said that Sarp border gate is very important as it opens doors to Georgia and other Caucasian countries passengers can pass through with their IDs.

He also added that they expect it to increase in upcoming years.

Sarp border gate through which 16 thousand passengers pass daily saw the lowest passenger process rate in January of last year with 388 thousand passengers, with 827 thousand 69 passengers being the highest rate in August of 2013.

Furthermore, it is reported that with Muratli border gate, which will be built soon in Borcka district of Artvin, going into operation, the truck traffic will diminish substantially.
