Scores of people continue to lose their lives in vehicle-related accidents throughout Turkey. 46 accidents occurred in 28 different provinces, killing 61 people and injured 311 others, during the weekend between August 23 and 25.
Six people died and 3 were injured in Agri, while 5 died and 2 were injured in Ordu. Among the accidents, 20 were injured in Kutahya, 17 in Manisa and 15 in Erzurum.
26 people died and 106 were wounded on Sunday August 25 alone.
The accidents and deaths were not limited to any region. Adana, Adiyaman, Afyonkarahisar, Agri, Aksaray, Amasya, Ankara, Bursa, Corum, Erzurum, Gumushane, Izmir, Kahramanmaras, Karaman, Kastamonu, Kocaeli, Konya, Kutahya, Manisa, Mugla, Ordu, Sakarya, Samsun, Siirt, Sirnak, Tokat, Tunceli, and Van are included among the provinces where the accidents happened.
Carelessness and excessive speeding were indicated as among the leading causes of the accidents.
Statistics from the Directorate General of Highways express that the death toll in 2012 was 3,750, and with 268,102 people injured in a total of 1,296,636 accidents.
The total casualties in traffic accidents over the last five years are 20,090 deaths and 903,520 injuries.
