Army chief says Turkey in sensitive period after PKK attacks

Chief of Turkish General Staff General Ilker Basbug said Monday Turkey was at a point unexplainable by words.

Speaking in an interview on a private Turkish TV channel, General Basbug said that many Turks lost lives in the past few months due to acts of militancy.

General Basbug's remarks came after a recent surge in PKK acts in Turkey.

He said that they were at a point that cannot be explained by words, adding that their feelings have been deeply wounded by the acts of PKK.

Sensitive period

Everyone has to be careful beginning with intelligence all the way up to taking the necessary precautions against PKK, he stressed.

I hope and am confident that we will display the same sensitivity in western regions of Turkey. Our western regions are also sensitive against PKK acts, General Basbug noted.

What is crucial is that we deal with increasing acts of terror as one single power and have to go through the process with the least losses, General Basbug said.

Financial Sources

It is high time for certain individuals, establishments, states and the structure in north of Iraq to do what they have to do against PKK, General Basbug said.

Touching on the financial sources of PKK, General Basbug said that it earns money from trafficking illegal drugs, illegal human trafficking and extortion from individuals living in Europe.

"Europe is the terrorist organization's financial source. 80 percent of all illegal drugs confiscated in Europe are associated with the terrorist organization PKK," General Basbug indicated.

PKK's presence in north of Iraq will (negatively) affect Turkish-Iraqi relations and, to some extent, Turkish-U.S. relations in the upcoming term, General Basbug also said.
