An Ankara business court accepted the case of an unemployed babysitter claiming compensation from her employer who fired her after she asked for a pay raise. The court's decision is considered significant as it might lead the way for compensation for all other uninsured babysitters across the country.
Nevin Ulusoy, who worked for a family for 15 months as a babysitter without any social security insurance, sued her employer when the family refused to raise her pay and laid her off. Ulusoy demanded severance and termination pay from the family in the total amount of TL 1,700.
The Ankara 6th Business Court first ruled that the plaintiff worked as a babysitter, contrary to the claim of the family, which said she helped with the housework. The court stated that Ulusoy started working in the household of M.O.B. on May 4, 2009, for a monthly pay of TL 950 without any notification to the social security authorities.
According to the lawyer of the plaintiff, Kemalettin Yılmaztekin, the court's decision to admit the case is important as unemployed babysitters in Turkey used to be fired without any compensation due to their uninsured status. He argues that this decision will serve as a precedent for future babysitters and open the way for their social security insurance and compensation.
