Numan Kurtulmus, the Deputy Chairman of Turkey's ruling AK Party and the President of the D8 group of developing countries with large Muslim populations, has described Israel as "a threat to world peace" because of its near-three week onslaught on Gaza.

Speaking in Ankara on Saturday, he strongly condemned Israel's "inhumane terrorist attacks" carried out through its bombardment and "Operation Protective Edge" launched on July 7 in which at least 975 Palestinians – mostly civilians – have been killed and more than 5,900 injured.

Kurtulmus said: “Israel has to realize this bad situation, otherwise cruel and inhumane Israeli attacks will damage world peace and the Israeli occupation of Gaza will turn more complicated.”

The president prayed for victims in Gaza and called for Israel to think of other practical ways to help stop the current aggression against them.

During times of affliction and crises, he also called upon human rights groups, especially the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, to help afflicted or oppressed people.

According to official Israeli figures, 40 Israelis – 37 soldiers and three civilians – have been killed since hostilities began.
