A fire broke out in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Thursday in a downtown building, leading to panic among people on the city's famous Kızılay Street.

The fire broke out in the attic of the office of the General Directorate of Turkey Sugar Factories AŞ on Kızılay Street for unknown causes.

Workers soon noticed the billowing smoke and people in the building were immediately evacuated.

Firefighters and ambulances rushed to the scene of the fire as flames engulfed the building. Some of the injured were given first aid at the scene.

Officials said workers in the building first tried to bring the fire under control but failed to contain it. Some of the workers were affected by smoke inhalation.

Surrounding streets have been closed to traffic while firefighters are still struggling to bring the fire under control.
