At least 32 people were killed and 147 injured in a terror attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport, Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said Tuesday evening.

The minister said a terrorist opened fire with an AK-47 assault rifle at the international terminal before detonating a suicide bomb - with three explosions hitting the airport.

Police and medical teams are at the scene and access to and from the airport has been blocked.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim was briefed by Interior Minister Efkan Ala and Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin and has ordered the formation of a crisis desk.

More than a dozen ambulances raced to the international terminal of Ataturk airport, CNN-Turk said.

The channel cited witnesses as saying two violent blasts shook the terminal, sparking panic among passengers.

"It was very strong, everyone panicked and started running in all directions," one witness told CNN-Turk.
