A fisherman is missing in the waters of Istanbul’s Kartal district after a skiff with two occupants capsized amid high winds early on Wednesday.

The 7-meter-long fishing boat was smashed to pieces after it hit rocks amid bad weather, according to local sources.

While one of the fishermen, identified as Mevlut Sekercigil, swam to shore his companion, Adem Karapinar, went missing when the craft overturned, pitching them into the Marmara Sea.

The coast guard and maritime police have been dispatched to the area on Istanbul’s Asian side.

The search-and-rescue operation is ongoing with the help of divers.
