İstanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş spoke to reporters on Friday about metro projects in the city and said that by 2019 the İstanbul metro network will be able to carry 11 million passengers a day.
Stating that İstanbul will make history in terms of the construction of an extensive metro network, Topbaş referred to full-page advertisements the municipality had placed in newspapers on Friday and said that their purpose was to let people know about the future underground and railway system of İstanbul so that they can make their plans accordingly.
“These are not dreams, but projects,” Topbaş said, and he added that there will not be a single district in İstanbul without a metro station. “We are creating a web of railways all over İstanbul,” Topbaş noted. According to Topbaş, even İstanbulites who live in the remotest part of the city will have access to the metro by 2019.
Explaining that the latest technology is being used in constructing the city's metro, Topbaş said, “The newest metros will operate without a driver; we are very proud to announce that we have such advanced technology.” Topbaş noted that they do not want İstanbul's public transportation to lag behind that of similar metropolitan areas.
