Istanbul square to be named 'Rabia,' mayor says

Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbas said Dortyol Square of the Esenler district will be named Rabia, meaning four or the fourth in Arabic, which has become synonymous with the anti-coup protests in Egypt.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Esenler Dortyol Square on Monday, Topbas told the press that he will submit an official proposal to the Metropolitan Assembly and Esenler District Assembly to change the new square's name to Rabia.

Topbaş said the idea came from Esenler Mayor Mehmet Teyfik Goksu and commented on the developments in Egypt, “No power can stand against the will of the people.” Esenler Mayor Göksu said the idea of changing the square's name is a demand from the residents of the district.
