Turkish ministers laid the foundation of the new terminal building of the Diyarbakir Airport, in Turkey's southern province, which would enable the Southeastern Anatolia Region to open abroad.
Minister of Transport and Communications Binali Yilidirim, Minister of Finance Mehmet Simsek and Minister of Food, Agriculture and Livestock Mehdi Eker attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, Yildirim stated that they prioritized the investments in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia Region in the past 10 years despite all the difficulties.
"We have continued our investments despite all difficulties. Diyarbakir has achieved Turkey's most modern airport. In 2002, 211,000 passengers flew in Diyarbakir. Last year this figure was 1 million 800 thousand and we expect 1 million 900 thousand this year" said Yildirim.
Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek also said the new airport would contribute to the solution process in the region.
