A total of 105 miners died in mine accidents in Turkey in 2010, according to the Mine Engineers Chamber and Turkey's Coal Authority (TTK).

Sixty-one mine accidents happened in Turkey, 43 of which occurred underground, last year. 105 miners died and 61 others were wounded in those accidents.

The biggest tragedy occurred at the TTK's Karadon Directorate on May 17, 2010. Thirty workers died and 11 others were wounded due to a coal mine explosion in the northern province of Zonguldak. The bodies of only 28 workers were pulled from the rubble, however search and rescue teams could not reach the bodies of two miners.

The second biggest accident happened in a mine pit that belonged to a private company in Dursunbey town of the northwestern province of Balikesir on February 23, 2010. 17 miners died and 18 others were wounded in the coal mine explosion.

Moreover, three workers died due to a mine collapse, followed by a fire, in Kesan town of the northwestern province of Edirne on July 7.

Almost 3,000 people lost their lives and 326 others were wounded in mine accidents in Turkey between 1955 and 2010.
